Where the most powerful get the most watertight

11/04'09 John Deeney SJ, 88, is the first American Jesuit of the Jamshedpur Province to get Indian citizenship. Author of a Ho-English dictionary, grammar and a host of publications in the Ho language, he has worked for the Ho tribals for more than five decades. His life and selfless service form an important chapter in the history of the early American Jesuits in India. Excerpts from an interview he gave to Janina Gomes for Jivan:
Tell us about your early years.
I was born in Philadelphia. I heard the call to become a Jesuit when I was still very young. I came to India in 1949. While studying theology at Kurseong, I came across reports on the Ho tribals in Western Singhbhum district of Bihar. Shortly after my ordination in Kurseong in 1952 I spent a month in Chaibasa where I was gifted a copy of a Ho grammar book written by Burrows in 1910. That started me on my studies of the Ho language.
What are the specific traits of Ho tribals?
The Hos are a large tribe, ethnically and linguistically related to the Mundas and Santals. Their language is related to languages spoken in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia and parts of India. The 1991 Census report gave the number of Ho speakers as 949,216.
When did you begin to work for them?
When I became the Headmaster of the St Xavier's High school in 1955 the school was in Chaibasa. Two years later it was moved to Lupungutu, three kilometers from Chaibasa. After I served for seven years as the Headmaster of the school I was assigned to Chaibasa parish. For twelf years I was deeply involved in pastoral and faith formation activities among the Hos. It was then I started preparing prayers and books in the Ho Language.
How did you manage to come up with so many publications in the Ho language?
In 1974 as other priests entered the Ho pastoral field I was moved to the high school at Lupungutu, so that I could prepare the Ho translation of a Missal cum Lectionary for all Sunday and feast-day Masses. Then I worked on the first ever Ho-English Dictionary, a Ho Grammar with a large English-Ho vocabulary, a large Ho Prayer Book, a Ho Hymnal, a Ho Bible History, the New Testament of the Bible and a book on the lives of saints – all in the Ho language. There was a Ho college graduate who helped me in all these. His name is Dhanur Singh Purty. Later with my guidance and support he published in the Ho language seven books covering all aspects of Ho Life and Culture. These seven books totalled about 1350 pages. In 2001 I returned to Lupungutu. Since then Mr Purty and I have published a book of the Psalms and Major Prophets of the Old Testament in Ho.
So you spent nearly 21 years coming up with one rare publication after another in Ho. Did you have time for pastoral work?
During these 21 years every Sunday I cycled to Bordor village to say Mass. As the community there grew, I became increasingly involved in their faith formation. That has now become a vibrant parish. In Oct 1995 I requested to be involved again in pastoral and faith formation work. So I was assigned to the Bhoya area of Chaibasa parish. I used to cycle from village to village getting to know the people entrusted to me. Three years later this became a new parish in Basahatu village.
Why didn't you write anything in English about the Ho people?
I have. The Spirit World of the Hos is an English book.
While many hunger for American ctizenship why were you keen on renouncing it and becoming an Indian citizen?
Missionaries abandon their original home and acquire a new home. I was granted Indian citizenship in Feb 1991. I renounced my American citizenship to express my complete solidarity with the Ho tribals I worked with and the many Indian brother priests I live and work with. India has been my home for 60 years now. At the age of 88 I look back with contentment on God's call to become a Jesuit and spend my life here in India, serving the Ho tribals, who have become my people.

"The Truth!"

11/01'02 India's diversity, poverty set Jesuit course by Janina Gomes

It was in January 2000, or close to it, that the number of Jesuits in India surpassed for the first time the number of Jesuits in the United States. At that time – at the dawn of the new century – the Jesuits of the South Asia Assistancy became the largest assistancy in the world. In 2001, there were 3,973 Jesuits in South Asia: 2,211 priests, 1,455 scholastics (students), and 307 brothers. Among them, 269 are novices filling out the assistancy, which covers India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
While there were no official celebrations, the new tallies have brought noticeable new pride in this part of the world. When one talks about the shift, leading Jesuits here often see significance in these new trends that go beyond the numbers. As elsewhere, India's Jesuits are still best known for their educational apostolate, with 181 primary and secondary schools, 18 technical institutions, 32 universities and 8 seminaries. Loyola College in Chennai is perhaps the best science college in India. St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai is known throughout India for its arts and science programs.

But increasingly, the Jesuits of India are getting into radically new social apostolates, working with and helping to empower the "untouchables", or dalits, as well as impoverished women and children. Following the lead of the 34th Congregation of the Jesuit order, they are increasingly becoming active in social justice-related activities, including environmental causes, throughout India and elsewhere. They have a "friends of the trees" program in Bihar, are involved in watershed development activities in Maharashtra, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh, and are working to solve ground water problems in West Bengal.
At the South Asian Assistancy Assembly in October 2001, the Jesuit leadership identified specific goals for their mission, including solidarity with the poorest of the poor – the dalits, tribals and women. To gain greater leverage, they agreed to network with like-minded agencies, promoting a "culture of dialogue" to participate in community life that went beyond traditional ministries. "Being first or largest brings its own sense of satisfaction, and the Jesuits of South Asia are not immune to it," Fr. Lisbert D'Souza, president of the Jesuit Conference of South Asia, said recently. "Nevertheless, with this feeling of contentment, there is also a heightened sense of responsibility for the universal society and its mission."

Traditionally, India has seen an influx of foreign Jesuits, mostly from Europe and North America. Today, that is changing. "There is now a realization and an acceptance of the fact that we must now be contributors in a big way to the mission of the church beyond our countries," said D'Souza. When the major Jesuit superiors gathered in September 2000, many were quick to seek personnel for short- or long-term service from the Jesuits of South Asia. In the past two years South Asian Jesuits have gone to work in Africa, Cambodia, Guyana, Russia and Japan. These new responsibilities come at a time when the demographics of the local provinces are shifting. "While there is no dearth of numbers seeking admission to the society in South Asia, questions need to be asked about the capacity of recruits for some of the specialized services that have been the hallmark of the Jesuits down through the centuries," D'Souza said. He noted a shift among those entering the society from the middle class to the socially, economically and academically less advantaged tribal and dalits who now jointly constitute nearly 60 percent of the new candidates.
D'Souza said the society needs to "evolve patterns and strategies that will prepare these young men for the distinguished service Ignatius requires of Jesuits – and this not only for South Asia but for the whole world."

Cedric Prakash SJ is the director of Prashant, a center for human rights, justice and peace in the state of Gujarat in western India. He expressed both clear purpose and pride in his work and the place of the India Jesuits in the world today. He said India is blessed with a rich diversity in cultures, languages, backgrounds and religions, and the Jesuits are constantly involved with these cultures, especially with the poor and the marginalized. It is India's diversity and poverty that is setting the society's course today.
In a couple minutes, Prakash rattled off names and places where Jesuits in Gujarat are working to empower the poor and bring greater dignity to their lives. One cannot work with the dispossessed, he said, without standing up for human rights and social justice.
Joe Antony SJ, editor of the Jesuit South Asian magazine JIVAN as well as the Catholic newspaper, The New Leader, said: "One realizes the importance of respecting and learning from other faiths." Dialogue is the pathway to counter sectarian politics and religious fundamentalism, he said.
If the work of the Jesuits here is increasingly measured by their commitment to the poor, the heart of what they are telling the world has to do with lifestyle and spirituality. Francis de Melo SJ, provincial of the Jesuit's Bombay province, speaks about India and Asia's rich spiritual heritage. He noted that even as the West becomes "postmodern", it is also entering an age that longs for "the deepest experiences of life and the powers of the universe."
De Melo said that the eastern way of thought matches many of Ignatius' insights. "Where the West plans and strives to 'get what one wants when one wants it', the Eastern way is to flow with life and the unexpected that life continuously brings," he said. He finds this notion very close to the Ignatian idea of indifference and obedience, he said, that of flowing wholeheartedly with God's Providence. "Where the West sets a high goal and struggles to reach it fast, there is the Eastern way of kaizen, the continuous, natural growth that doesn't struggle to a target, but enjoys the process of allowing life to expand, naturally like a tree, always putting little shoots at the tips of each of its thousand branches – no stressful grabbing at a pre-fixed target, just natural growth, not slow, not fast, leading to results that usually exceed planned targets," de Melo said.
He likened this to the continuous reaching out for "God's greater glory".
De Melo said the Jesuits of India could contribute through their own mission and lifestyle this vision of the East to the world. He said they are now challenged to be Asian Jesuits rather that simply Jesuits in Asia.

"They receive us as friends, not just as strangers":

"When peace treaties or alliances were to be concluded with the Indians, the authorities made use of the services of the fathers, for they alone were acquainted with the native dialects, and, on account of their constant friendliness, enjoyed the full confidence of the chieftains. […]
In Brazil […] He lived the same nomadic life as they, travelling from place to place in the forests, studying the different dialects, and endeavouring to reduce them to a system. While so doing, he conceived the bold idea of setting systematically to work to abolish the local variations in the South American Indian dialects, and to establish a standard language, which could be used in all parts of the continent as a means of intercourse. He compiled grammars and dictionaries on which were based the linguistic researches of all the later missionaries, and from that time onwards the whole order collaborated in the scheme initiated by Anchieta. […]
The missionaries were now able to expound to the astonished Indians in the native tongue the meaning of what they had sung. The Jesuits aroused such interest that the savages invited them home to their forests and plains, there to sing to the old people and explain the meaning of what they sang."

01/05'09 Greg Szymanski: "And keep you abreast of that side of The News which is basically taboo in the mainstream media and covered up by the alternative media by scoundrels like John Stadtmiller, Jeff Rense ... Who else? Alex Jones, of course, and others who just really are making it more difficult for you to figure out the story. And in a sense, I knew Alex was an idiot when ... He stated me on the show all the time until I started to talk about the Vatican, and then for some reason I wouldn't go on anymore. And then, once I've heard he said that I must have been abused by a priest, and that's why I hate the Caholic church. The point of the matter is he lied about it all and is a cover-up artist, and I'm not afraid to say it. [...]
That's what they're doing now: they're taking away the last country that had too much freedom for them, even though they say they want this country to be free. But that's how they get away with this. It's the soft soap approach of unity and freedom when in fact they're gonna steal it from you. That's what they're doing right now with the stock market. They're transferring the money into the European Union, and the EU, folks, was formed for one reason and one reason alone: to put the pope into more control, and to put the control onto a few people, and to take away the sovereignty of those countries in Europe, and that's exactly what it was all about. And what do you think they're doing with the American Union here, the North American Union? The same damn thing! So why we're going to let it happen? Because many of us Americans – let's all be Americans right now, same Americans – many of us Americans, most of us Americans, 95% of us Americans would rather watch American Idol. That simple. If they didn't, if they cared, if they were more like this guy, David, perhaps we'd have a different world. [...]
And most Americans unfortunately will believe that, and even if there is a growing number of people that don't, most of them don't understand how this thing works, anyway! So they're gonna fall back and believe the government in the end, anyway, when push comes to shelf. He says this: 'Greg, is America just a big invasion of bodysnatchers or anyone of these movies, you know, the ones where a shadowy enemy changes the pattern the way people think, and we are the outsiders with the problem? Because that is the way I feel.'"
